Silence Part 8

Silence Part 8

Paxton scrutinized the screen as Ted rewound the feed. It was clear, clear, clear, then a huge glare seemed to blind everything, and then it went back to normal.
“What about the other cameras?” Pax asked with a scowl.
“Same thing.” Ted looked at him dully and hit pause on the tape. “What would you like me to do, sir? Should I have a new security field put in?” The older man waited for him to answer.
“No.” He stood back up and crossed his arms over his chest. “I’ll look into it myself. Watch the cameras tomorrow night. Jane is coming here again.”
Ted nodded at his employer. “Goodnight, sir.”
“Goodnight.” Pax walked from the room his mind in overdrive. What had happened?

She was nervous. Jane smoothed her hair for the tenth time and told herself that everything was going to be just fine. She was not falling asleep on his couch this time! If Pax left her on the couch she was going to hunt him down! She drew in a deep breath and knocked on the door of his house. The wind stirred her curls up around her cheek as the door opened. Ted stood before her.
“Miss Jane. Please, come in. Mr. Clor will be with you shortly.” He ushered her back into the room with the fireplace and left her to fan through a magazine. Jane’s hand shook. She hadn’t been able to get the whole encounter with the other man, Thaddeus, out of her head all day. She’d gone to work like normal, but had been practically bouncing with anticipation for tonight. Now that she was here, all she could think was. I’m so stupid to come back here. Obviously this place is haunted or something. She jumped when she heard footsteps come toward her. She glanced up to see Pax with a quizzical expression dotting his face.
“Would you like to go for a swim?” He smiled at her and brushed his hand over his perfectly tailored suit. Swim? She’d ruin her curls. After they’d taken an hour to do. She smiled back at him.
    “Swim?”
He saw her hesitation. “I’ll show you.” He led her through his maze of a house and into a section of the house that instantly got warmer. The air smelled like chlorine as they went through double doors and into an open room that sure enough housed a monstrous pool. It was more like a mini lake than a pool.
“That. Is your pool?” She wanted to laugh. How could she have gotten so lucky? Screw her curls she would jump off a bridge if this man said so.
“I don’t have a swimsuit.” She was not swimming in her bra and underwear. They were not something she wanted to show off to mister millionaire. Why hadn’t she thought to wear something sexy underneath? Because, I’m not that lucky.
“Ted will take care of it.” He flashed her one of his smiles again and stripped out of his suit in less than ten seconds. Jane gasped. Okay, it was bad enough that he was good looking; he was toned like a body builder. She blushed five shades of red as he dove deep into the pool. What the heck.
“Miss Jane, here you are.” Ted was suddenly behind her. She gasped again in surprise and automatically took the sleek black bikini that the man offered. She tried not to think too much about all what was happening right now. How did they know her size? Did she even shave her legs? She gulped and ran to the bathroom to change.

The bikini fit like a dream. She cautiously made her way back into the pool area feeling self conscious. She’d never been overweight really, but the fact that a man like that was looking at her was enough to unnerve her. She saw his head bob up to the surface of the pool, and he waved her in.
“Come on in, Jane!” He sounded like a little kid. She realized that she hadn’t heard that tone from him before. It sounded like relief. She slipped into the water and was instantly surprised at how pleasant it felt on her skin. She touched the bottom. He dove beneath the surface again, and he was gone for what felt like a long time. When he bobbed back up he was within a foot of her.
“How does it feel?” he breathed softly, water dripping down his face.
“Ahh..amazing,” she stuttered. This was a strange second date, but what did it matter. Her mom was really going to flip out about this. She still hadn’t called her about her new “man.” Was he her man? It was too early to tell. She chewed on her bottom lip. She heard him chuckle softly under his breath as he dove back under the water. He sure liked to swim.

Silence Part 7

Silence Part 7

The day seemed to drag on as Jane filled orders left and right. She couldn’t get Paxton or Thaddeus out of her mind. Thaddeus had seemed so kind, genuine, and so, so, real. How was he just a dream? Why would he break into Paxton’s house and just decide to have a conversation with her? It didn’t make sense. Just then the bell overhead rang. Her eyes averted to the door. It was ten minutes before she could leave. She groaned under her breath, until she saw who walked in. It was him. Paxton. His eyes were shaded, his suit pressed to perfection. She just stared. He approached the counter, and made a strange expression when he saw her.
“Hi,” he said with a strained tone. Had she upset him last night for some reason?
“Hi, umm…what can I get you?” Just relax, he’s not going to eat you, she told herself.
“Straight espresso. Three shots.” The guy was going to have a heart attack. She rang him up and quickly made his coffee. She brought the cup over to the counter and smiled at him.
“Here ya go. Hey, um, I’m sorry about last night. I didn’t mean to fall asleep at your place. You could have just told me to leave if you felt the date was going badly.” She fidgeted uncomfortably. He scowled at her. Whoa. She folded her arms across her chest. He’d been the one to invite her over.
“I’m sorry about that. I was indisposed for awhile. Please, Jane. I’d like to see you again. Would you like to try once more?” He sounded sincere.
“I would love that.” She gave him a full smile this time. He nodded and turned around to find himself a seat. Jane finished cleaning up and flipped the open sign to closed and hesitantly approached the man still sipping his super strong coffee.
“Is it okay if I join you for a little bit? I’m off the clock now.”
He simply nodded still sipping. She sat down across from him. They chatted lightly for awhile until Jane realized she was meeting Ali after work.
“Oh, crap! I have to run! So, tomorrow then?” The plans were already running through her mind. What would she wear?
“Tomorrow,” his deep voice rumbled as he finished the last of his coffee and rose.

Who was Thaddeus? Paxton shut his study door and sat down, his head pounding once more. The caffeine was having less effect than it used to. He was going through every possibility. The girl could have been dreaming. He would have sensed another person in his house before he dove into the pool for silence. He clicked his intercom.
“Ted?” His eyes darted to the clock. 11:01 p.m.
    “Yes, sir?”
“Check the security feed from last night. Tell me if you see anything.”
    “I will.”

Paxton depressed the button and stared downward. They told him it was voluntary. The sum had been so great. How could he refuse? It was supposed to be one dose that would alter his DNA. They hadn’t told him about the aftermath. He and five other men had signed up for the experiment. He had been just a college kid, no money, no job, steeped in debt. This was his one ticket out of the rat race. He closed his eyes remembering the moment his life had tumbled out of control. They’d shaved his entire body and laid him face down on a sterile table. Someone had been talking to him softly instructing him to relax. A woman. He remembered her voice in his dreams. They’d inserted over a dozen needles into his veins and then everything was fuzzy. He’d woke up with a killer headache, and the sound of nurses screaming. The other men around him lay unconscious except one other. He seemed just as disoriented as Paxton did.
“It failed,” said a man from behind Pax. “You’re free to go. You’re money has been transferred to your banking accounts already. I’m sorry.” The man looked sadly disappointed as he turned and walked from the room. That’s when the noise started. An endless roar of noise. Pax’s had spent most every night locked in a dark room drinking and mourning his old life. He’d been poor, but at least he had been able to walk out in public without an onslaught of screeches, voices, and roars pounding in his skull. He didn’t even care about the money at first. It just sat in his bank account. Finally, over a year later he’d bought the house, hired Ted, and had figured out how to deal with the noise. The other men who’d also received payment had seemed to disappear. Except for a couple who’d recommended the meeting with the girl. He hadn’t actually seen them since that day they’d all signed their life away.
“Sir?” Ted’s voice came over the intercom.
“Yes?” Pax tapped his fingers against his desk anxiously.
“You’re going to want to see this.”

Silence Part 6

Silence Part 6

Jane drove home feeling weird. The look that Paxton and Ted gave each other told her that Thaddeus was not a friend or invited into the house. Maybe I was just dreaming. I did have a lot of fine wine. She gripped the steering wheel tightly and let out a long breath. It sure had felt real to her. There had been no second invitation for a date, so that must have been it. The one night with prince charming was now up in smoke. She’d drooled. She slapped her forehead and glanced in her rearview mirror. She pulled into traffic and made her way back to her small two bedroom house. She climbed out of her car and headed inside, throwing her purse on the counter as she came in. Her house felt oddly silent. Not that it was normally loud. She was just feeling weird after last night. That’s probably what it was. She headed toward the bathroom to take a shower.

Jane toweled off her hair as she walked out into the kitchen. She made herself a quick meal. She had to be to work in an hour. Her job was nothing special, just a simple barista in a local coffee shop. She did know how to make the best coffee on the planet though. She got into her normal work clothes. Nice jeans, colored t-shirt and comfortable shoes. She headed out the door a few minutes later.

“So, what happened?” Ali grabbed Jane’s arm the moment she walked in the door at Jo’s Cup of Jo coffee shop. She laughed shaking her head.
“There is way too much to tell you in five minutes. I work at ten.”
“Give me the condensed version then! Did he kiss you?” Her bright blue eyes pleaded for more information. Ali was a hard core romance reader. She’d read more romances than Jane’s mother and that was saying something.
“He took me to O’hares.” Jane knew Ali would flip over that.
“What! O’hares! Oh my gosh!” Ali turned Jane around with a twist. “You are kidding, right?”
“No, I’m not. My meal probably cost two hundred bucks. And he got the most expensive wine on the menu. It was…nice.” A smile teased her lips. Her friend was going to explode over what she told her next.
    “And?”
“We talked for awhile, then he invited me over for dessert to his….” She coughed intentionally. “Mansion. The guy is handsome and rich.” The warm smells of coffee filled Jane’s senses. She had two minutes.
“I want one! Does he have a brother?” Ali swept her dyed blonde hair back and threw up her manicured hands.
“I don’t know. He disappeared at his house, and here’s the weird thing. I talked to a guy, named Thaddeus, while I waited for my date to come back. He never came back! The crazier thing was—..”
“Jane!” called her boss from behind the counter. Jane smiled at Ali.
“Hey! Finish what you were saying!” Ali cried with desperation.
“My date and his butler said they didn’t know a Thaddeus. I better go!”
“That’s insane!” Ali said, and Jane could see she was itching for more of the story. Though, that was pretty much everything.

Silence Part 5

Silence Part 5

“Ali, I’m freaking out here!” Jane gushed on the phone as she followed behind the handsome man’s amazing car.
“Jane, is this smart? Maybe he’s a serial killer or something and always brings girls home for dessert? You need to be careful!” Ali always worried about serial killers. She loved mysteries and crazy thriller T.V shows.
“I promise I’ll be armed with pepper spray in both hands. He’s rich, and he’s frickin’ hot!” She heard her best friend giggle on the other line.
“Okay, but remember those ninja moves I taught you if he attacks you.”
Jane smiled remembering the “ninja” moves. It was simply kick the guy in the balls and run like the dickens.
“We’re here, gotta go. Bye!” She hung up the phone really hoping she wouldn’t have to use any ninja moves on Paxton. It did feel strange. A gorgeous, rich man interested in her? Inviting her to his house? Maybe Ali was right. This was the beginning of all psycho killer movies. Dumb girl goes into rich man’s house. Eaten by a T-Rex. She cautiously opened her door and stepped onto the well manicured lawn. She could smell money coming from the pores of this place. His house was amazing, and she could see a large building where she believed would be a pool or an indoor tennis court. What did this guy do for a living? She would love to have that kind of a business. She felt drabby in her dress now as she walked toward the front of the house. He had pulled his crazy, expensive black Lamborghini into a fancy garage that was three times bigger than her place. She came up the stairs, and instantly the door opened. A plain looking man in a nice suit bowed to her as he opened the door.
“Come in, miss,” he said in a stuffy voice. He had his own Alfred. Fancy. Jane walked in and nearly choked on her own spit. The inside was like a palace. Did she just suddenly land in a Disney film or what? Everything was so pristine and clean, white walls, glistening wooden floors, a grand piano, windows that rose high above her head. It felt like too much to take in all at once.
“Mr. Clor will be with you shortly.” He led her to a sitting room with dim lights, a fireplace crackling, and soft music playing. She smiled. Now, this was just like every romance book her mother forced her to read. Handsome man. Fire place, music playing. She pinched herself. She must have fallen asleep on her date with Timothy because this was definitely messing with her brain today. The butler man brought her a glass and filled it to the brim with more wine. Paxton must really want to impress her with his fancy wine and fancy house. Jane, just think how happy your mother would be if you came home with that man! She smiled to herself and sipped on the wine.

Pax was hyperventilating. He’d done too much. He’d overtaxed himself. His mind screamed at him for relief. If he over caffeinated eventually it didn’t work. He needed his pool. He needed the silence. She was waiting for him. He could sense her happy mood, but the noise of everything else over road her calm feelings she invoked. Was that why he’d invited her home? She’d made him feel relaxed?
“Ted, entertain my guest. I will be back in a moment.”
The man nodded from the doorway as Paxton practically broke out in to a run toward his pool. He thought he could handle it for one night. He was wrong.

Jane waited patiently. She thumbed through a magazine, the strange, robot-like man gave her. He had one expression. Seriously. Was he a robot? A beautiful face with a flap on the magazine caught her eye. Was that perfume? She opened the flap and rubbed the perfume on her neck.
“Eh, hmm.” Please God, was that…? She turned toward the sound to see a man with light hair and a goatee.
“Hello, dear. My name is Thaddeus. Mr. Clor is indisposed at the moment. Perhaps, I can be of some company for you for a short time.” He gave her a smile. She smiled back at him nervously.
“Is he okay? He looked pale earlier. I can leave…” She started to say.
“No, no, no, it’s fine. He will be just a bit longer, darling. How about we chat for a bit while we wait, for our dear friend.”

Who was this man? She should just leave this place. A shiver raced down her spine. Could she leave? The man made light conversation with her, and Jane found herself relaxing in his company. He was quite pleasant once she’d drunk another glass of wine. She loosened up and began to tell this stranger about her life. Her hopes, her failures, all about how disappointed she made her mother. She hardly noticed when Thaddeus left the room, and she’d fallen asleep on the couch by the fireplace.

Water dripped off Paxton as he sat on the edge of the pool. He held his head in his hands. He’d failed again. He’d staid in the pool all night. He coughed up water leaning over the edge of the pool. What had happened to Jane? He stood to his feet chastising himself for being so weak. He couldn’t hear her anymore.
“Ted?” he called as he exited the pool and slipped a towel around his waist. The hired man approached him.
    “Yes, sir?”
“Where is Jane?” He rubbed his temples slowly.
“She is asleep on the couch,” Ted said simply and bowed. Pax went to his room to shower and change. He combed his hair, inspected his suit, and walked out to where the girl was left. The fire had died. Sure enough, the girl lay sleeping on the couch. Did she have a job to go to? He gently touched her shoulder. Such a peaceful thinker. For one moment, it felt as if the chaos ceased. His eyebrow rose as he gently nudged the girl again.
“Jane?” he said. She moaned in her sleep.

Jane awoke with a start and right away knew she had been drooling. Her eyes darted up in surprise. Oh no. She was drooling in front of the rich guy. She sat up trying to comb through her frazzled hair.
“Hi, I…” She looked around sleepily. She was still at his house. Oh no! Ali was probably in panic mode! She’d told her she’d call her when she left Paxton’s house. She grabbed up her purse and pulled out her phone. Twenty-five texts and thirty missed calls. She instantly texted her friend that she was fine and turned her head to stare at the man before her. Perfectly groomed while she— She looked down at her appearance and could still feel a dab of drool her face. What the heck happened last night? She remembered being offered wine, taking to Thaddeus, and then blissful sleep.
“Where’s Thaddeus?” she asked as she accepted a cup of coffee that Ted offered her.
“Thaddeus?” Paxton’s eyebrow raised a fraction in question.
“Yes, he talked to me while I waited for you last night. I thought he was a friend of yours.” Silence filled the room as Paxton exchanged looks with his hired servant. Who was this girl talking about? Paxton focused in on the noise. He hadn’t heard the man if he had been in the house.

Silence Part 4

Silence Part 4

This had been a mistake. Was he ready to go into a crowded restaurant and make conversation with a woman? Pax clutched his espresso and stared down into the black surface. He had to keep living his life like a normal man. He closed his eyes. Right? It wasn’t that he wasn’t attracted to the many women who threw themselves at him it was just that they brought so much clamor to is already noisy life. He gulped down his coffee forcing his closed eyes open. He would meet this, Jane, and maybe he would even fall in love with her. It was possible. A loud screeching reverberated through his skull until he moaned in pain. Could he really do this? He grit his teeth and threw the cup. It shattered leaving a black river dripping down the wall. Ted heard him and opened the door.
“You alright, sir?” he asked in a monotone voice. Paxton gripped his temple.
“Fine. I need another one, Ted. Make it quick.” He was going to need it tonight.

O’hare was packed. That was to be expected though. Paxton smoothed his hair with his hand as he walked over to his reserved table for two. A single red rose rested in a vase. It was 6:58. The girl would show up in two minutes. His mind was numbed by the caffeine. For now. He heard her come in. She was thinking about the phone call. He turned toward the door to see a brunette walk in. She was average size, he’d guess five foot four, fair skin, brown eyes, and a thrift store dress, he guessed, that fit her loosely. Not becoming at all. Her posture was bad too. He looked away from her. This had been a bad idea. He didn’t want to appear to be rude. She spotted him and walked over on high heels that didn’t match her thrift store dress. This was going to be a long night.
“Hi, I’m Jane.” She held out her hand to him with a smile. Her smile was beautiful. It took him aback for a moment. He finally rose to his feet and shook her hand, pulling out her chair for her.
    “Please, sit.”
She sat down and smiled up at him. He sat back down and ordered them the most expensive wine on the menu. He then waited patiently as she hemmed and hawed over the menu. She finally chose a light salad.
“Dinner is on me, Jane. Please, pick whatever you like.” He barely said the words before she ordered a hefty steak. He smirked. At least the girl would eat something. After they had ordered he folded his hands onto the table.

This man was intense. From the moment Jane had sat down she felt like he was looking into her soul. He was well dressed. His suit probably cost more than her car. Yeah it did. He was so manicured that she felt like a slob in the dress she had gotten for ten bucks on sale. He was intimidatingly handsome too. He had the underwear model look going on. His dark hair was just as perfect looking as his suit. Wow. It was all she could think as she sat there with his eyes staring at her. What did she say to such a creature as he? Don’t mess this one up, Jane. He’s definitely going to make cute grand babies for mom. She saw a smirk slip into the corners of his mouth. She had a weird feeling creep up her spine. It felt as if he had heard that thought. That’s insane, people don’t read people’s thoughts, dummy. This is not X-men. Jane smiled at him.
“I’m sorry, what was your name again?” She wanted to slam her head into the wall. Did she really just ask this gorgeous man that? She had forgotten his name!
“Paxton. My name is Paxton, Jane.” The way he said her name you’d think that he was talking to a child. Jane’s lips twisted. This was going amazing already. Luckily, the waiter brought the bottle of wine just then. Just what she needed. Alcohol to make her say stupider things. They sipped on their wine in silence for a little while until it felt uncomfortable.
    “Where do you work?”

Pax winced inwardly. Of course the girl would want to know how he made so much money. He couldn’t tell her the truth so he simply fabricated.
“I have my own business.” It wasn’t entirely a lie. He did come into money because of something he did.

The cool air teased Jane’s hair as they made their way outside after the date. It had felt nice. At least she had thought it had been nice. The food didn’t make her regret her life, and the company wasn’t half bad either. She’d found out that Paxton had his own business, hadn’t been on a date in six years, and wasn’t a heavy talker. She could work with that. At least he wasn’t cheap. They stood outside O’hare both not knowing where to go from there.
“Would you like to come to my house for dessert?” he asked her with a painful look in his eye.
“Are you ill?” She observed that his knuckles were turning white from him clenching his fist.
“No, I’m alright. How about that dessert?” He gave her a dashing smile.
    “I’d love that.”

Silence Part 3

Silence Part 3

Jane ran through the house pulling curlers out of her brunette hair. She was running late! She scooped her eyeliner up and with quick strokes applied the makeup. Too thick! Ugh! She growled at herself as she smudged the thick line with her finger. She didn’t have time for this. Timothy was coming in five minutes for her date! She hadn’t been having much luck with men in the last five years. Every time she was actually brave enough to give a guy her number they didn’t call. Timothy was the first guy to call in a long time. She wiped the eyeliner again and managed to make herself look like a raccoon. This was not her day! She took a cotton ball and managed to wipe it off finally. She stared at her face in the mirror. Fairly light skin, some freckles splattered across her nose and small lips. She always hated her small lips. Her sister Jen had inherited the huge lips as well as the huge boobs. Genetic genes were fickle things. She reapplied the eyeliner and this time took her time. Perfect. She stared at her reflection again and grimaced. She never could get her makeup to look as good as Jen’s. At least she was out of her jeans, t-shirt, and tom boy haircut phase. Thank God. A knock suddenly came to the door. He was here. She stole one more glance at herself and nodded. Good enough. She’d met Timothy at work. He was a new guy. A little awkward looking with his bigger nose, and too skinny body. He was still of the male gender, and she was just plain out running out of time in life to be picky anymore. She was bridging the thirty mark, and her mom was freaking out about grand kids. If her mom only knew how few men were left that didn’t stalk you, rape you, or have a jar full their ex-girl friend’s toe nail clippings under their bed. Her mom would stop bothering her. She was trying for goodness sake. She took a moment and just drew in a deep breath. It was going to be just fine. You can do this, Jane. Just relax. She opened the door. There he was. Just as awkward looking as ever. He gave her a shy smile and held out an ugly bouquet of flowers. She took them with a forced smile.
“Thanks, Timothy.” She walked over to the kitchen and filled a tall glass with water and inserted the flowers.
“I thought maybe we could go to Chucks?” he asked with a smile. She was going to have to work on being attracted to that smile. Jane smiled back.
“Okay, sounds fun.” Chucks? Seriously? The place reeked of bad dates and greasy fries. She’d caught a perfect man here. She chided herself. Give the man a chance. Maybe he just loves gut bombs. He offered her his arm. She hesitantly took it and walked outside with him.

They arrived at Chucks. Jane could already feel the stomachache waiting to happen. She hated this place. It was the one place men took her when they didn’t have money. Chucks was cheap. Really cheap. You could get a burger for 2.99. Could she handle this again? She forced a smile on her face. Yes she could! They walked in together with Timothy clutching her arm. This was weird. She glanced back at the car. Maybe she should make a break for it? All she had to do was hold down number two on her phone, and it would speed dial Ali for an emergency date dumping excuse. They sat down at a table and ordered two orange pops. Rather, Timothy ordered her an orange pop. Gross. What was she three-years-old? She would stomach all of this. For the sake of her mother. Could she really even consider marrying a man who loved Chucks? Ugh. Timothy stared at her after he ordered their food as well. She had no opinion apparently today.
“So, tell me about yourself, Jane,” he said with his toothy smile, fiddling with his straw paper. She had already made hers into a bow. She touched it self-consciously.
“Um, not much to tell. I…” She always did this! Every time a man asked her that question she put her dang foot in her mouth. “I like Facebook.” Oh God! Why did she just say that?
“Facebook? Oh yeah, I’ve heard of that place.”
Was this guy for real? He wasn’t on Facebook and didn’t even know what it was?
“I like reading sci-fi books. I have a whole collection of…” He just started going on and on until Jane felt like she was drifting in outer space with him. For mother. Remember that. Timothy kept talking about his sci-fi books until a buzzing made Jane nearly jump out of her seat. Her phone! Thank God! She grabbed it like a lifeline.
“I’m sorry, I have to take this. Be right back.” She held up a finger and fled the scene. She hadn’t even looked at who was calling. Did it matter? They just saved her from another hour of sci-fi boredom.
“Hello?” she asked cautiously. It was probably Ali.
“Hello, my name is Paxton. I received your number? Sorry, if this is a bad time. I was wondering if you would like to go out with me this Friday? Say seven o’clock?” Long silence. Jane’s jaw fell open. Who was this? Paxton? Did she know a Paxton?
   “Hello?” he asked.
“Oh! Sorry! Yes, I would love too. Where at?” Please don’t say Chucks! The man’s voice was low and sexy sounding. Did she really just have another guy call her back?
“O’hares. I’ll be in a black suit with a rose. Goodbye.”
“Bye, ugh…” She stared at her phone. O’hares? That place cost like a hundred bucks a plate! This was a dream right? She glanced back over her shoulder to the direction Timothy was sitting. Goodbye Chucks. Hello O’hares!
